The Ocean State Avian and Exotics Service includes three technicians and two veterinarians—one who is board
certified in zoological medicine, Dr. Lucy Spelman, and one who is working toward her board certification in avian
and small mammal medicine, Dr. Julie DeCubellis. Our goal is to provide the best possible veterinary care for your pet
by combining our skills in bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, invertebrate, and small mammal medicine with the expertise,
when needed, of the many other specialists at Ocean State, including oncology, ophthalmology, radiology, surgery, and
emergency medicine.
Appointments
We see patients five days a week either by scheduled appointment or by emergency appointment. We welcome returning
pets, new pets, and referral cases. We treat all injuries and illnesses, and are equipped to perform minor and major
surgery, endoscopy, dentistry, and advanced imaging (ultrasound, MR, CT, and fluoroscopy.) We also offer wellness
exams, which we recommend for all newly acquired pets, and on an annual basis for all long-lived ones. On weekends
and after hours, avian and exotic pets are seen by Ocean State emergency vets, and transferred to our service as soon as
possible; we are always available for consultation with the emergency team.
Hospitalization
Hospitalization is often necessary for sick avian and exotic patients, most of whom require carefully controlled environmental conditions. Our hospital ward is specially designed to meet their needs. Hospitalized patients are monitored 24 hours per day and, when necessary, are placed in intensive care; continuous oxygen therapy is also
available.
