Ocean State Veterinary Specialists (OSVS) is a 24-hour referral and emergency hospital located in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. The staff includes specialists in internal medicine, surgery, radiology, emergency/critical care, oncology, ophthalmology, and avian/exotics. The emergency service is staffed by approximately 10 experienced, internship-trained clinicians and the technicians are highly trained in emergency and critical care nursing. The emergency/critical care residency program currently has three residents, and there is a well-established internship program with six interns per year.
Our state-of-the-art facility is approximately 17,000 square feet and includes a large ICU, treatment area, two surgery suites, 11 exam rooms, blood bank, and ample office space. Specialized equipment includes digital endoscopy and laparoscopy, ultrasound, digital radiography, and CT scanner. An MRI truck is stationed here full time with trained technicians available six days a week. The ICU is equipped with a mechanical ventilator, telemetric EKG, defibrillator, multi-parameter monitors, i-stat analyzer, oxygen cages, and much more. Our comprehensive in-house laboratory equipment includes multiple CBC and chemistry analyzers and a coagulation analyzer.
OSVS places a premium on teaching and continuing education. Daily "walk-through" rounds provide an opportunity for continuous learning. We have in-house education for doctors and technicians and host referring veterinarians for continuing education forums several times a year. Our internship and residency program help to promote a didactic atmosphere and gives the emergency clinicians and specialists ample opportunity to teach others.
The support staff is highly trained and enthusiastic about continuing education as well. The technicians working in the intensive care unit are capable of managing most nursing cases, including those on mechanical ventilation, peritoneal dialysis, continuous thoracic drainage, and so on.

Internship-trained emergency doctors are wanted at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists. This position offers emergency clinicians a unique opportunity to work in a well-equipped, state-of-the-art facility, side-by-side with a large group of specialists. The emergency doctors do not just work evenings and weekends, they work many weekday "inpatient" shifts as well, giving them the opportunity to manage critical care patients and benefit from the referral hospital environment. The desire to continue learning and to participate in the teaching of interns and student externs is very important, and a good sense of humor is essential!

Ocean State Veterinary Specialists is always looking for part- and full-time experienced veterinary technicians for all shifts to complement our existing staff. Anyone with experience as a veterinary technician will be considered—specialty technicians are needed but technicians with general practice experience can be put through our training program in order to be prepared for the challenges of specialty and emergency practice. These positions require some evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.
