May 16             Current Transfusion Practices in Veterinary Medicine

This talk is meant to review the basics of transfusion medicine, blood compatibility testing, the risks and benefits of blood transfusions, and different types of transfusion reactions associated with allogeneic blood transfusions. Following this background, we will discuss autotransfusion in veterinary medicine, including the indications for, advantages of, procedure, new advances on how to do this in veterinary medicine. ‚ÄčLastly, we will discuss the technique of performing an autologous blood patch for the treatment of pneumothorax.
