Ocean State Veterinary Specialists offer the following Oncology services::
- Evaluation of all neoplastic diseases
- Collaboration with board-certified surgeons and radiation oncologists to determine optimal
cancer treatment plans
- Chemotherapy administration and monitoring
- Melanoma vaccine therapy
The oncology specialist is residency trained and has worked as both a clinical instructor and assistant
professor of medical oncology at Louisiana State University. The oncologist is board certified by the
American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM).
The medical oncologist specializes in the treatment of cancer in pets. The main role of a medical
oncologist is to develop appropriate treatment strategies for the cancer patient, which may include
chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy or a combination of these modalities. To achieve this goal,
the oncologist works closely with our surgeons, nearby radiation treatment facilities, and the local
pathologists to determine the type of tumor present and carry out the safest and most effective
therapeutic plan for our patients. If chemotherapy is indicated, the medical oncologist will administer
this treatment and help to monitor the patient’s progress during therapy. Most of our patients are dogs
and cats, but since the principles of cancer therapy are similar in all animals, we also work in conjunction
with your avian and exotic animal service to assist in the treatment of a variety of other species.
