Staff
Susan M. Newell, DVM, MS, DACVR

Board Certified - Radiology

Dr. Newell completed her veterinary degree at the University of Minnesota in 1989. She
then completed an internship at the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in 1990. Her
residency training was obtained at the University of Georgia and she became board-
certified by the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 1994. She served as an
Assistant Professor and Co-Section Head of Radiology at the University of Florida for 5
years before joining the staff of OSVS in 2000.

Dr. Newell has published numerous journal articles and has lectured on many topics in
diagnostic imaging at veterinary schools and veterinary conferences.  In her free time
she enjoys raising vizslas, growing bonsai and playing a variety of athletics.
S. Christopher Ralphs, DVM, MS, DACVS

Board Certified - Small Animal Surgery

Dr. Chris Ralphs graduated from the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998.  He
then continued his training with a general internship at the Veterinary Referral and
Emergency Center in Norwalk, Connecticut and a surgical internship at Gulf Coast
Veterinary Specialists in Houston, Texas.  He completed his surgical residency at the
University of Minnesota.  Following his residency, Dr. Ralphs was in practice for three
years at Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialists in Pittsburgh, PA before moving to Rhode
Island.  He enjoys soft tissue neurologic and orthopedic surgery and is trained in both
the TPLO and TTA procedures for cruciate ligament ruptures.   

On those days when he is not at work, Dr. Ralphs enjoys spending time with his wife
and two daughters and exploring the outdoor pursuits in the area.  They are glad to be
back in the Northeast where they can see their family and friends more often.
Amy Trow, DVM, DACVECC

Board Certified – Emergency/Critical Care

Dr. Trow graduated from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. She went on
to complete an internship at North Carolina State University, then a residency at Tufts
in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care. Her special interests include management of
severe trauma, critical anesthesia and post-operative patients, sepsis, mechanical
ventilation, and immune-mediated disease. Dr. Trow joins Dr. Justine Johnson in
supervising the emergency department, the Emergency/Critical Care residents and
the interns. She also manages some of the more critical cases in the hospital, and helps
the other services with any unstable patients.

Dr. Trow is a Cape Cod native. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking with her dogs,
anything on the water, refinishing furniture, spicy food and painting and drawing.  .
David Sweet, VMD, DACVS

Board Certified - Small Animal Surgery

Dr. Sweet completed his veterinary degree at the University of Pennsylvania, School of
Veterinary Medicine in 1989, and stayed on there to complete an internship the following
year. He completed his small animal surgery residency training at the North Carolina
State University, College of Veterinary Medicine and became board certified by the
American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1994. He spent a year at Washington State
University as a clinical instructor in small animal surgery, and then two years as an
Assistant Professor of Small Animal Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Sweet was the Chief of Surgery at the Veterinary Referral Center in New Jersey
before joining the staff of OSVS in 2003.  He was on the board of the Rhode Island
Veterinary Medical Association from 2004 through 2008 and served as its president in
2007.  He was honored with the Veterinarian of the Year award in 2008.  He is currently
on the board of directors of the Companion Animal Foundation.  His clinical interests
include pain management, soft tissue surgery, minimally invasive surgery and oncologic
surgery including reconstruction techniques.  His personal interests include tai chi,
reading and enjoying the company his children who get smarter and more beautiful
Every day (thank goodness they take after their mom).
Ben Nolan, DVM, PhD, DACVIM

Board Certified - Internal Medicine

Dr. Nolan completed his doctorate of veterinary medicine at Tufts Cummings
School of Veterinary Medicine in 2005.  After a one-year internship at Alameda
East Veterinary Hospital in Denver he returned to Tufts for a three-year
residency in small animal internal medicine.  In 2009 he completed this degree
and went on to achieve board certification from the American College of
Veterinary Internal Medicine.
 
Prior to pursuing veterinary medicine, Dr. Nolan had his first career in the
chemical sciences.  He received his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Colorado
State University in 2001, performing research in lithium ion battery technology.  
During his time in Colorado he became a staunch CSU Ram fan and enjoyed spending
time in the mountains;  before heading back East to start veterinary school, he
spent a winter as a ski instructor at Solitude in Utah.  At home Dr. Nolan has a
large animal family of three dogs (Salty, Alli, Emma) and two cats (Gretchen,
Isabelle
Mark Stamoulis, DVM, DACVIM (cardiology)

Board Certified – Internal Medicine

Dr. Stamoulis a native Rhode Islander, grew up in Barrington and went to Brown
University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Biology in  1984.  He
graduated from the Tufts University School of Veterinary  Medicine in 1988 where
he received the Hills Student Award for  proficiency in small animal medicine and
surgery.  Stamoulis completed a  rotating internship in medicine and surgery and
a residency in  cardiology at the Animal Medical Center in New York City.  While
there  he received the Intern of the Year award in 1989 and the Veterinarian of
the Year award in 1992.  Dr. Stamoulis became board certified in
veterinary cardiology the following year.
 
He has written numerous articles ranging from heart disease in ferrets  and mynah
birds to pacemaker implantation in cats.  His professional  interests include
management of chronic congestive heart failure and  congenital heart disease.
Outside of work, Dr. Stamoulis enjoys coaching  youth sports for his three children
as well as playing hockey and golf.
