A veterinarian pursuing a residency has decided to specialize in one area of veterinary medicine. Fewer
than 10% of graduates from veterinary colleges go on to complete a residency.  Ocean State Veterinary
Specialists provides advanced training programs in the areas of Emergency Medicine/Critical Care and
Soft Tissue & Orthopedic Surgery. Residents are selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants. All
applicants must be fully licensed veterinarians, and must have completed a rigorous internship program.
Candidates are selected based on demonstration of excellence in their academic performance, as well as in
their clinical performance during their internship year.
The residents at OSVS spend time working with the specialists in the clinic, as well as teaching our interns.
They are required to complete a research project and must submit a paper for publication in a veterinary
journal. The residents participate in weekly teaching rounds and journal review sessions. Upon completion of
their program, the resident must pass a very difficult examination from their specialty board, and are
thereafter board-certified in their specialty.  To date, two residents have completed the Emergency/Critical
Care residency at OSVS, and both have successfully passed the certifying examination.
