Avian and Exotic Pet Medicine With The Staff of Ocean State Veterinary Specialists

The avian/exotics specialist at OSVS is board certified by the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM). The avian and exotic pet medicine service provides care for the less typical family pets, including:

  • Birds (except large ratites)
  • Reptiles (non-venomous)
  • Amphibians
  • Invertebrates
  • Fish
  • Small mammals (except primates), including but not limited to, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, hamsters, and gerbils

Patients can be seen by scheduling an appointment or by emergency appointment. We welcome returning pets, new pets, and referral cases. We treat all injuries and illnesses and are equipped to perform minor and major surgery, endoscopy, dentistry, and advanced imaging including digital radiography, ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans. We also offer wellness exams, which we recommend for all newly acquired pets, and on an annual basis for all long-lived ones. For our regular clients, we will also provide nail, beak, and wing trims for birds, and incisor trims for rabbits and guinea pigs. On weekends and after hours, avian and exotic pets are seen by OSVS emergency veterinarians and transferred to our department as soon as possible. We are always available for consultation with the emergency team.

Hospitalization is often necessary for sick avian and exotic patients, most of whom require carefully controlled environmental conditions. Our hospital ward is specially designed to meet their various needs. Hospitalized patients are monitored 24 hours per day and, when necessary, are placed in intensive care with continuous oxygen therapy also available.

The goal of the avian/exotics department is to provide the best possible veterinary care for your pet by combining our skills in bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, invertebrate, and small mammal medicine with the expertise of the many other specialists at OSVS, including specialists in oncology, ophthalmology, radiology, surgery, and emergency medicine.

Remember: For your pet’s safety, please bring your pet to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists in an appropriate carrier!
